I recently had the incredible opportunity to join a virtual panel with the Doctoral Life Design Studio at Johns Hopkins University to talk about building a career in global health, especially when the world is facing massive crises like climate change and pandemics. Alongside an amazing co-panelist from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, we shared our firsthand experiences on how to manage health programs in resource-limited settings and how to successfully step into impactful roles at international organizations.

In this piece, I share a bit about my personal "why"—from growing up in Malawi and witnessing the stark health disparities that lead to preventable maternal and child deaths, to how those experiences drove me to become a registered nurse and midwife. I also reflect on the full-circle journey of going from relying on the WHO’s Family planning global handbook while working on the frontlines, to actually working at their headquarters in Switzerland to help develop global sexual and reproductive health programs.
